The Niger River is the source of life in West Africa

The Great Mosque in Djenne is the biggest structure in the world built from mud. Workers have to renew it every year.

Various tribes live by the river Niger, and each one has a different mark of recognition. Fulani women tattoo the area around their lips.

In the Sirimu village lives the Bozo tribe – the fishermen. The roofs of the mud built houses are where women put millet to dry. Millet is the staple food of the Sahel region.

Every year after the rainy season, houses built from mud must be renewed with a new layer of mud.

Pastoral Fulani are a semi-nomadic people living along the Niger. Their tradition of increasing the livestock herd size in order to demonstrate wealth is resulting with overgrazing – one of the main causes of desertification and climate change in the Sahel.

Legendary Timbuktu – one of the most important ancient caravan towns of the Sahara – is known for its old libraries where a wealth of manuscripts is held.

In its northernmost point, the river Niger reaches the Sahara that is inhabited by nomadic people – the Tuareg.
