The Dogon are one of the most traditional peoples of West Africa, who still practice animistic beliefs.

Their settlements are carved into cliffs, nestled in caves and spread along the foothills of the huge escarpment of Bandiagara.

Funerals of important people are the most exquisite ritual of the Dogon.

Masked dancers participate in all rituals that have anything to do with death.

Animal sacrifice is a regular part of any important ritual.

Men are proud hunters so gunfire marks all feasts.

The 200 meter high cliff of Bandiagara is taboo for strangers and a realm of death. Only men that had passed a special initiation can climb it.

The Dogon used to build settlements in the cliffs in order to hide from neighboring warrior tribes.

Nowadays, only a few families still live in the cliffs…

Others have moved to the foothill of the escarpment from where it is easier to reach the gardens.

The Dogon are mostly animists. This old man practices fox-divination.

The Hogon is the spiritual leader of the Dogon people. He lives in a special palace where he receives guests and deals with spiritual issues of his people.

The Dogon are not threatened by warrior tribes anymore, but from climate change, desertification and an ever more frequent lack of water.

Women process the millet – the Dogon’s staple food.

Men are traditionally hunters, but nowadays, wildlife is almost impossible to find in these surroundings.

Onion production was proposed to them by French anthropologists. Nowadays, onions and souvenirs are the only export product of the Dogon people.

The market in Sangha – one of the largest Dogon villages. The Dogon week has only five days and is based on circulation of the market among the five largest villages.
